| Oklahoma now leads the all-time series against Oregon State, 13-3 ... the loss snaps a 10-game winning streak for OU in the series, which was their second longest active streak against a major conference team ... Lea Wodach had the second multi-homer game of her career; she now has eight home runs in her career ... her second home run was a solo, inside the park home run in the seventh; it was the first inside-the-parker by a Sooner since Callie Parsons had one against Louisiana Lafayette in the 2014 Women's College World Series ... Wodach's three hits tied a career high, something she had done twice previously ... freshman Sydney Romero hit her team-leading fifth double of the year; no other Sooner has more than three ... seven of Oregon State's eight hits went for extra bases ... two of Oklahoma's three losses this year have been on walk-off home runs |
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – No. 12/11 Oklahoma (7-3) fell victim to a walk-off home run as Oregon State (11-1), which is receiving votes in both polls, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Sooners, 6-4, at Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
The loss snapped OU's seven-game winning streak on the season, and it also stopped its 10-game winning streak against the Beavers. It was tied for the second longest active streak for the Sooners against a major conference team.
The setback, which was the second time this year OU lost via the walk-off homer along with the season-opening game against Minnesota, dampened an impressive performance at the plate by sophomore Lea Wodach. The starting left fielder went 3-4 at the plate with two home runs as she drove in all four runs.
It was the second time in her career that she homered twice, also doing so last year against Central Arkansas on March 31. The three hits tied a career high, while the four runs driven in were one off her career high and the most she has had this season.
Tied at 3-3 after six innings, Oklahoma looked like it had the game-winning run on a bizarre play.
With one out, Wodach sent a deep fly to left field. Oregon State's Lovie Lopez made a diving attempt on it in the corner but came up empty as she crashed into the fence in foul territory. It was ruled, however, that she touched the ball in fair territory, resulting in a fair ball for Wodach. She raced around the bases and came home with the Sooners' first inside-the-park home run since Callie Parsons did it against Louisiana Lafayette in the 2014 Women's College World Series.
The lead would not last long, though, as the Beavers rallied in the seventh with two outs. After a leadoff double, OU got two quick outs thanks to a ball hitting the batter in fair territory and a fly out which moved the runner to third. An intentional walk was issued to Lopez, but Madison Anthony ended it with a full-count homer to left field on the seventh pitch of the at-bat.
The start looked promising for Oklahoma as freshman Sydney Romero led off with a double to right field. Two batters later, Erin Miller walked to bring freshman Fale Aviu to the plate. On a 3-1 pitch, Aviu blasted a ball to right field, but Oregon State's Shelby Weeks ran through the plastic fencing to make the grab and keep three runs off the board.
After being robbed of a homer in the previous frame, Wodach left no doubt for OU in the second. She pulled a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center for her second of the year and the seventh of her career.
Oklahoma stranded runners on the corners with two out in the top of the third, two of its season-high 10 runners left stranded, and Oregon State capitalized on its third straight leadoff extra-base hit as Jessica Garcia blooped a double to right center. Two batters later, Lopez launched a two-run home run to left field to put the Beavers up 2-1.
Oregon State added to its lead in the fourth as Mikela Manewa hit a leadoff double and came around to score three batters later as Kayleen Shafer hit a double of her own.
The Sooners rallied in the top of the fifth and tied the game after an Oregon State error prolonged the inning.
With one out, Miller hit a comebacker to pitcher Meehra Nelson, but Nelson threw wildly to first base and Miller was able to move up to second. After a strikeout, senior Kady Self walked to put two runners on for Wodach. The sophomore laced a double to left center. Miller scored easily, while Self arrived at home plate at the same time as the ball. She eluded the tag and touched home for the tying run.
Oklahoma had a chance to break the deadlock in the sixth as Arnold led off with a chopped double over third base. Pinch hitter Caleigh Clifton walked two batters later and both she and Arnold took third on a groundout. However, they were stranded there as another groundout kept the game tied at 3-3.
