Softball Completes Unbeaten Fall Weekend

NORMAN – After offense carried the day on Friday, the University of Oklahoma softball team was led by its pitching staff Saturday as it posted a pair of shutouts to close out play at the team's annual Fall Festival.
Sophomore Paige Parker struck out 12 in a four-hit shutout of Seminole State as the Sooners won, 9-0, in six innings. In the nightcap, senior Kelsey Stevens twirled a four-hit shutout of her own while striking out seven in a 4-0 win over St. Gregory's.
In going 4-0 over the weekend, OU outscored its opponents 44-1 and dominated nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.448 to .180), hits (56-16), extra-base hits (15-2) and walks (18-5). The pitching staff was strong, too, allowing just one earned run in 25 innings for a 0.28 earned run average and recording 36 strikeouts.
Oklahoma resumes its fall schedule on Oct. 7 in a game at 6 p.m. against North Central Texas College at Marita Hynes Field.
Oklahoma 9, Seminole State College 0 (6 innings)
Parker was the story for the Sooners' against Seminole State as she survived an early scare to shut down the Lady Trojans. After allowing the bases to load with one out in the first, she promptly struck out the next two batters to end the inning. She then fanned the next six batters she faced, retiring 12 batters in a row in all until the fifth inning.
Oklahoma scored the first run of the game in the second on an RBI single off the wall by junior Lea Wodach and added to the lead in the third when sophomore Nicole Pendley hit a run-scoring single. Later in the inning, freshman Sydney Romero singled to right field to score Pendley, giving OU a 3-0 lead after three innings.
The Sooners scored two more runs in the fourth behind an RBI triple by senior Paris Townsend and an infield single by sophomore Kelsey Arnold that allowed Townsend to score.
A four-run fifth put the Sooners comfortably ahead at the game's final score of 9-0. Senior Tori Nirschl drove a two-run double to the wall in center field to make it 7-0, while later in the frame, Wodach put down a perfect bunt in front of home plate to drive in OU's eighth run. Arnold capped the scoring with her second RBI single of the game.
Romero and Arnold each went 3-3 in the games, while Arnold, Wodach and Nirschl led OU with two runs batted in each.
Oklahoma 4, St. Gregory's 0
Stevens was strong for the Sooners, just as Parker was in the first game of the day. Stevens retired 12 straight batters at one point that spanned from the second inning to the sixth. Five of her seven strikeouts came in that 12-batter stretch.
Oklahoma scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, grabbing an early 2-0 advantage thanks to a fielding error. Pendley led off with a single before freshman Fale Aviu's fly ball to left field was dropped. A walk to Romero loaded the bases before senior Erin Miller drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with a single to left field. Two batters later, freshman Shay Knighten singled through the left side to bring home Miller for the game's second run.
After three scoreless innings, OU added another run in the fifth as Pendley singled up the middle and Romero brought her home with a double down the left field line.
The sixth inning marked the only time St. Gregory's got a runner past first base, but OU's defense flexed its muscles to keep the Cavaliers off the board. With two outs and a runner on second, a single was hit to left field but the throw home from Aviu was there well enough in advance to force a rundown where Arnold tagged out the runner for the final out between third and home.
OU then added an insurance run in the sixth. Townsend doubled to right center and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Raegan Rogers. Knighten singled to move Rogers to third before junior Macey Hatfield issued a sacrifice bunt to plate Rogers.
