NORMAN — With a two-round 590 (+14), the No. 9 Oklahoma men's golf team is in a three-way tie for first place at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the 7,146-yard, par-72 Traditions Club.
The Sooners started the day by shooting a 302 (+14) against the 13-team field, which features seven squads ranked in the Golfstat top 50, to hold fourth place. They then fired an even-par 288 in the second round to move up the leaderboard.
OU shares the lead with No. 41 and host Texas A&M and New Mexico State. No. 34 Arkansas sits in fourth at 15 over par, while No. 7 LSU rounds out the top five with a 595 (+19).
Pacing the Sooners is Michael Gellerman, whose two-round 142 (-2) has him in a tie for second place. The senior opened the event with a 74 (+2) and answered with a season-low-matching 68 (-4) in the afternoon. Gellerman, who pocketed eight total birdies on Saturday, is one stroke behind leader Ben Crancer of Texas A&M.
With a 149 (+5), freshman Grant Hirschman shares 15th place. Hirschman struggled in the first round, recording a 6-over-par 78, before improving by seven strokes in the second, posting a 1-under 71.
Senior Charlie Saxon shot a 76 (+4) and 74 (+2) in the first and second rounds, respectively, to finish the day with a 150 (+6). He is currently tied for 22nd place.
Sharing 22nd place with Saxon is junior Beau Titsworth, who is playing as an individual and unattached from team scoring. Titsworth recorded scores of 77 (+5) and 73 (+1) on Saturday.
Sophomore Max McGreevy is tied for 32nd place with a 152 (+8), while junior Luke Kwon sits in 57th place with a 158 (+14). McGreevy's scores for the first two rounds were a 2-over-par 74 and a 78 (+6), and Kwon posted an 83 (+11) and 75 (+3).
Sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said he is pleased with the way his squad responded in Saturday's second round.
"It was good to see us play well in the afternoon with a bounce back worthy of having a chance to win tomorrow," Hybl said. "Gellerman played great this afternoon, and once again, all of our guys contributed to today's efforts. We are looking forward to tomorrow."
The final round of the Aggie Invitational is scheduled for Sunday. The Sooners will be paired with Texas A&M and New Mexico State and tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT. Live results (updated every three holes) will be available on Golfstat.com.
