Reedy Wins Hammer, Sets School Record

March 20, 2015 | Track and Field

TEMPE, Ariz. – Her indoor season had been one for the record book and, if her first competition of the outdoor season is any indication, Julia Reedy is going to be a Sooner to watch in the weeks ahead.

After redshirting during the 2014 outdoor season, Reedy entered her first outdoor meet as a Sooner and set a school record in the hammer. Reedy recorded a 200-2 in the hammer to move to the top of the career list by nearly three feet and win the event at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.

Two other Sooners, Sarah Tolson and Jess Woodard, had PR throws in the competition as well. Tolson, a junior, threw the hammer 192-7 to improve her best and tighten her grip on the fourth spot on the career top 10 list. Woodard, a redshirt freshman, moved onto the career list in fifth place with a 178-9.

Charles Nguyen joined the PR parade with a 198-2 to finish sixth in the competition and move into second on the career list. Austin Perry threw 181-3 to close out the hammer results for the Sooners.

Two other events were held on the first day of the meet and Sooners did well in those events. Jacob Burcham won the 1,500-meter run with a 3:44.13. That time puts Burcham into a tie for ninth place on the all-time career list. Brandon Doughty was fourth with a 3:45.02 and Alex Deir finished sixth with a 3:46.56. Abbabiya Simbassa finished eighth with a 3:46.89, helping the Sooners produce 19 points in the one event.

In the women's 1,500-meter race, Belle Wallace was the top Sooner finisher. She finished fourth with a 4:26.82.

With the success in the first four events of the meet, the Sooners lead the team standings. The OU men have a seven-point lead over host Arizona State while the OU women have a nine-point lead over the ASU women.
