Brewer Secures Spot in NCAA Semifinals

ST. LOUIS — Oklahoma redshirt junior Cody Brewer moved one step closer to his first national title as he advanced to Friday night's semifinals at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships inside Scottrade Center.

Brewer continued his dominant tournament run with his third bonus-points victory in as many matches. The Kansas City, Mo., native downed No. 12 seed George DiCamillo by major decision, 14-5. The win made Brewer an All-American again as he became the 26th Sooner to reach the milestone for the third time.

Brewer struck fast with an early takedown and never trailed in the match, leading 7-1 after the first and 11-4 after the second. In total, Brewer tallied five takedowns, a three-point nearfall and the riding time point (with 5:12) in the contest.

In tonight's semifinals, Brewer will look to hand No. 1 seed Chris Dardanes of Minnesota his first loss of the season.

The four other Sooners who qualified for the national tournament saw their seasons end on Friday afternoon, including redshirt senior Justin DeAngelis and redshirt sophomores Clark Glass, Matt Reed and Ross Larson.

Glass stayed alive at his first NCAA Championships with a 6-2 upset of No. 14 Coleman Gracey from Army. He led throughout the entire match, scoring via two takedowns, an escape and the riding time point. Later in the session, he fell to Mikey England of Missouri by decision, 4-1, to finish 2-2 at the tournament and 20-15 for the season.

At 157 pounds, No. 10 seed DeAngelis took on Missouri's No. 9 seed Joseph LaValle, competing throughout but dropping a 7-4 decision. DeAngelis, a two-time NCAA qualifier, concluded his redshirt senior campaign with a 21-7 record and a 63-29 overall career mark.

The 174-pound bout between Reed and Kurtis Julson of North Dakota State University remained scoreless after the first period. With the riding time point to Julson, the score was tied at 2 after regulation, sending the match to sudden victory. There, Julson was awarded a takedown as time expired to defeat Reed by decision, 4-2. In his first NCAA Championships appearance, Reed went 1-2 and finished the season with a 26-13 record.

Larson faced Rutger's William Smith at heavyweight, falling by major decision, 12-2. Larson struggled to score, recording just two escapes in the contest. For the season, Larson posted a 24-9 mark.
