ST. LOUIS — All five Oklahoma wrestlers advanced at the 2015 NCAA Division I Championships inside Scottrade Center on Thursday night, as two-time All-American Cody Brewer moved to the quarterfinals.
At 133 pounds, No. 13 Brewer upset No. 4 Johnni DiJulius of Ohio State. The bout remained scoreless through the first period before an active second frame from Brewer, where he recorded an escape, takedown and three-point nearfall to take a 6-0 lead. In the final period, he added a takedown and secured the riding time point with 2:08 to post the upset. In Friday morning's quarterfinals, Brewer will face No. 12 George DiCamillo of Virginia.
Competing in the championship bracket, redshirt senior Justin DeAngelis and No. 15 seed Ross Larson fell at 157 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
The match between No. 10 DeAngelis and Kent State's No. 7 seed Ian Miller was close throughout, with Miller leading by a point after both the first and second periods. In the final frame, Miller turned DeAngelis, pinning him in 5:07. DeAngelis' next opponent is No. 9 Joseph LaVallee from Missouri.
No. 15 seed Larson took on No. 2 Michael McMullan of Northwestern at heavyweight. Larson's only points came from two escapes, and he fell by major decision, 11-2. Next up, Larson will take on William Smith from Rutgers.
In consolation action, redshirt sophomores Clark Glass and Matt Reed both recorded their first victories in their NCAA debuts to stay in the competition.
At 165 pounds, Glass faced Patrick Robinson IV of Purdue, winning by 6-2 decision. Glass tallied two takedowns, an escape and the riding time point with 2:39 in the match. He will wrestle Army's No. 14 Coleman Gracey.
Reed took on Cornell's George Pickett at 174 pounds. Reed built a 4-2 advantage through two periods, before Pickett pulled ahead. Trailing 5-4 late, Reed recorded an escape on the edge of the mat with 16 seconds remaining in the match. With 1:20 riding time, he took the contest by 6-5 decision. In Session 3, Reed will battle Kurtis Julson of North Dakota State University.
Fourth-year OU head coach Mark Cody said his squad needs to remained focused in tomorrow's third session.
"Emotionally there were a lot of ups and downs today," Cody said. "To have everybody in for day two was positive, but we have to understand that we have to stay solid and build our leaders as the match goes on. If we do that, we will be OK tomorrow."
Session 3 of the NCAA Championships is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT on Friday with the action airing on ESPNU. Coverage of each mat will be available online at ESPN3.com.
