OU Rowing Notches Two Wins on Saturday

NORMAN -- The Sooner rowing team claimed a pair of first place finishes on the first day of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Saturday, March 14 on Melton Hill Lake to open up its 2015 spring season.

After placing second in four of the five morning races, the Sooners picked up wins in the third varsity eight/first novice eight race and the second varsity four in the afternoon session.

The Oklahoma second varsity four crew finished in a time of 6:51.069 to beat the boats from Alabama, Minnesota and Tennessee. Oklahoma's first novice eight also made its mark, finishing in 6:28.247 to defeat a pair of Alabama crews.

“It was a good day of racing for us,” OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. “The team is gaining some valuable experience against some really good teams.

“We haven't had a lot of time on the water this spring so this is a great way to kick off our spring break training. We can take what we learn this weekend into practice next week.”

The Sooners finished Saturday with two victories, seven second-place finishes and one third place finish. The Sooners narrowly notched a win in the second varsity four race in the morning session to sweep the day but crossed the finish line just under a second after Minnesota with a time of 6:49.249.

The second and final day of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational is tomorrow, as Oklahoma will compete in five morning races to close out the weekend. Full heat sheets can be found here and live results can be found here. OU's first race on Sunday is set to begin at 9:02 a.m. CT.
