PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – No. 4/3 Oklahoma snapped its two-game losing streak in emphatic fashion with a 10-1, five-inning win over San Diego State Thursday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
OU (10-2) used a pair of four-run innings to down the Aztecs (7-3) and post its fifth run-rule win of the season. The win was also the sixth in a row for Oklahoma in the series, and it has won the past five matchups between the schools by a combined score of 24-1.
The offense was led by an unlikely source as senior Jessica Vest went 2-2 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI. She entered the game with just five career multiple-RBI games, the last of which came last year at Iowa State on March 29 when she drove in two runs.
The scoring started for the Sooners with a four-run first inning.
The first three batters all reached as freshman Nicole Pendley singled through the left side, senior Lauren Chamberlain was hit by a pitch and senior Shelby Pendley walked to load the bases. OU got on the board then when junior Kady Self reached on a fielder's choice.
The bases got loaded back up for the Sooners when junior Erin Miller reached safely on a fielding error by the Aztecs' shortstop, but junior Whitney Ellis quickly changed that with a two-run single up the middle. A walk to freshman Paige Parker again loaded the bases, and Miller scored the fourth run of the frame when she came home on a wild pitch.
San Diego State threatened to score in the bottom of the first as OU starter Kelsey Stevens issued three walks, but with two outs she got Jaylene Ignacio to foul out to third base.
Stevens settled down from there and held the Aztecs without a hit until a two-out bloop single in the fourth inning. She got the win to improve to 3-0 on the season and finished the game with just three hits and one run allowed. She struck out four and walked four.
Oklahoma gave Stevens a pair of insurance runs in the third inning.
Parker led off with a double down the right field line before junior Tori Nirschl came on as a pinch runner for her. Two batters later, Vest hit a double of her own to center field to make it 5-0. Two batters after that, Chamberlain drilled a single back up the middle to make it 6-0.
OU then broke the game open with a four-run fourth.
Self led off by getting hit by a pitch. Fellow junior Leslie Miller then pinch hit and pulled a single through the left side before freshman Lea Wodach reached on an infield single to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts put the Sooners' scoring chance in jeopardy, Vest came through with a single back up the middle to drive home two runs.
Senior Callie Parsons followed as a pinch hitter and went back up the middle herself. Wodach scored easily, but Vest appeared to be thrown out at the plate. However, the umpires ruled obstruction on the SDSU shortstop, resulting in Vest being safe at home.
The Aztecs broke up the shutout with an RBI single in the fifth inning, but it wasn't near enough to mount any sort of serious threat.
Oklahoma returns to play Friday with a single game against No. 8/7 Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT
