TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 4/3 Oklahoma (6-0) scored at least three runs in every inning and picked up its fourth run-rule win in six games after a 14-4, five-inning win over Boston (0-1) Friday morning in the first game of the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sooners are now 6-0 for the ninth time in school history, all of which have occurred under head coach Patty Gasso. In addition, Oklahoma has won all six games this year by at least seven runs. That matches the longest such streak in school history, equaling the mark set from Feb. 12-20 in 2005.
Oklahoma's offense was led by senior Lauren Chamberlain, who was 2-3 with three runs scored and four drive in. In addition to an RBI single, Chamberlain connected in the fifth inning for her team-best fourth home run.
The three-run shot was No. 76 in her career to move her into a tie for seventh on the all-time DI home run list with Arizona's Jenny Dalton (1993-96). She is 14 away from tying and 15 away from breaking the all-time home run record of 90 by UCLA's Stacey Nuveman (1997, '99, 2001-02).
In addition, junior Erin Miller drove in a season-high three runs thanks to a triple with the bases loaded in the first inning.
The offensive outburst came in support of starter Kelsey Stevens, who earned her first win of the season in her third start. The junior struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed four runs on five hits in the complete-game effort.
Oklahoma spotted Boston the first run of the game in the top of the first, but the Sooners responded with 14 straight runs, beginning with five in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman Nicole Pendley led off the game by reaching on a throwing error by Boston shortstop Brittany Younan. Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley followed with back-to-back walks to fill the bases. Two batters later, Miller rocketed a grounder past the backhand of Boston second baseman Jilee Schanda and ran all the way to the wall in right-center for her three-run triple.
After a walk to junior Whitney Ellis, fellow junior Kady self reached down to get the bat on the ball and executed a squeeze bunt to make it 4-1. On a 2-1 pitch in the following at-bat, senior Jessica Vest collected her first hit of the year by dropping a single into center field.
The Sooners tacked on three more runs in the second as Millar again came through in the clutch.
With one out, Chamberlain reached on Younan's second error of the game. Walks to Shelby Pendley and freshman Paige Parker loaded the bases for Miller. Once again, she sent a hard shot to second base and this time it went through Schanda's legs for a two-run error. Junior Tori Nirschl, who pinch ran for Parker, came home next as Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put OU on top 8-1.
After chasing Boston starter Lauren Hynes, OU scored three more runs off relief pitcher Melanie Russell in the third.
Vest led off with a walk and moved to second when freshman Kelsey Arnold singled back to the pitcher. Nicole Pendley then hit an RBI double off the wall in center field and Chamberlain followed with an RBI single back up the middle to make 10-1.
Chamberlain broke for second on a passed ball and as Gabi Martinez attempted to throw her out at second, Martinez's throw skipped into center field to allow Nicole Pendley to score.
Boston scored three runs in the top of the fifth, but it was too little and too late to keep the game from ending via run-rule.
