November 07, 2015 | Rowing
NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma rowing team opened the 2015 Head of the Hooch on Saturday. The 5,000-meter course is on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn.
OU raced seven boats in three races in Saturday's competition with all boats finishing in the top eight of the contests.
The Sooners opened the day strong, competing two boats in the women's championship eight race. The OU “A” boat finished in second place out of 22 boats with a time of 16:23.7, just 4.3 seconds behind first-place Clemson. OU “B” completed the course in fifth place, recording a 16:47.9.
In the 45-team women's college and club novice eight contest, which marked the first competition for the novice team, the Sooners registered a fifth-place showing after finishing with a 17:59.6. The University of Alabama topped the leaderboard at 16:49.8.
The OU “A” boat dominated the 26-team women's championship four race finishing with a time of 16:56.0, 45 seconds ahead of second-place Miami “A”. OU “C” completed the race in fourth place at 17:50.1, and OU “D” finished sixth with a 17:59.7. Oklahoma “B” placed eight, recording a 18:02.2.
“It was a great day of racing,” eighth-year OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "I'm really proud of the effort and intensity of this year's team. The fours raced especially well, and the close loss to Clemson in the eight will help us stay hungry as we move into winter training."
The Sooners will return to the Head of the Hooch Sunday at 11:13 a.m. for the women's open pair contest. OU will finish up competition with the women's open eight, slated for 11:53 a.m.
