WACO, Texas – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team put the finishing touches on a successful weekend in Waco for the Sooners with a clean, 3-0 sweep of Baylor on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a three-match slide for the Sooners as they improved to 9-15 overall and 3-9 in the Big 12. The Bears dropped to 16-11 and 4-9 as Oklahoma swept the season series, six sets to one.
The Sooners registered their fifth sweep of the season and second in conference play by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23. They dominated the first two sets with a .490 hitting percentage at the break. Oklahoma hit .419 in the first and an astounding .556 in the second.
Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) led the Sooners with 14 kills on a season-high .471 attack rate. She hit .667 with seven kills in the first and .571 with five kills in the second. Through 12 conference matches, Holst has reached double figures seven times and led OU in kills six times.
As a team, Oklahoma hit a season-best .374 as junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) hit a team-high .500 on nine kills and one error. In two matches against Baylor, she totaled 17 kills and just two errors for a .536 attack rate. Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) added nine kills on one error for a .471 attack rate.
Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) finished second on the Sooners with 11 kills as she hit .320 with three digs and two service aces.
Freshman setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) collected 39 assists and sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) added 10 digs.
For Baylor, Andie Malloy led all players with 20 kills on a .436 hitting percentage. Setter Amy Rosenbaum dished out 36 assists to go with a team-high nine digs.
The win marked the first road, Big 12 win for the Sooners this season. Oklahoma has now won 13 of the last 14 matches against the Bears and have swept the season series four years in a row.
The Sooners have four matches left on the season, all at home. They return to McCasland Field House to face TCU Saturday, November 21. The match will start at 12:00 pm and admission is free.
