NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team notched its first Big 12 win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Baylor at McCasland Field House on Saturday night. The Sooners ended a three-match slide as the improved to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Bears dropped to 12-4 and 1-2.
Oklahoma claimed a 25-18 win in the first before Baylor narrowly won the second, 25-23, to go into the break tied at a set apiece. The Sooners pulled out in front with a 25-18 win in the fourth and put the match away, 25-14, in the fourth. The Bears led the fourth, 12-10, before OU used a 10-0 run to pull away; finishing the set on a 15-2 run to end the match.
For the match, Oklahoma outhit Baylor, .275-.113. In the final two sets, the Sooners hit .409 and .323, respectively. Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) and freshman outside hitter Madison Drescher (Southlake, Texas) tied for the team-lead at 12 kills each. Drescher hit .500 to go with six blocks, while Holst hit .286 with four digs.
“To get 12 kills and hit .550, for an opposite, is pretty talented,” remarked head coach Santiago Restrepo of Drescher. “We need that kind of performance from her for us to be successful.”
Andie Malloy led all players with 15 kills and notched a double-double for the Bears with 12 digs. Shelly Fanning finished second on the team with 13 kills on a .321 attack rate to go with five blocks.
Defensively for Oklahoma, three players finished with double-digit digs. Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) recorded her third double-double of the season on a 17-assist, 10-dig night. Senior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) and redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) tied for the team-lead with 11. Freshman setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) led the offense with 23 assists.
Junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) was dominant on both sides of the net. She tallied eight kills and hit .583 with just one error on 12 attempts. On the defensive side of the ball, she matched her career-high in blocks with nine, including one solo and eight assists.
The Sooners are on the road twice next week beginning with a match at TCU on Wednesday, October 7.
