October 03, 2015 | Rowing

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma rowing team opened its 2015-16 fall season on Saturday at the Head of the Oklahoma, competing on its home course. The regatta, part of the four-day Oklahoma Regatta Festival, is being held in the Oklahoma City Boathouse District.

A total of three OU boats participated in the collegiate eight race, while another four were entered in the collegiate four. Between the two races, all seven OU boats finished within the top six.

The Sooners started the day in the collegiate eight, with the Oklahoma A boat taking third place out of 15 participants with a time of 14:44.10. The Oklahoma B boat finished just behind in fourth place with a time of 14:59.97, and the Oklahoma C boat claimed sixth place with a time of 15:22.39.

Oregon State won the race with a 14:33.18, while Tulsa was the runner-up with a time of 14:39.96. Kansas State's A boat rounded out the top five with a 15:07.74.

In the 25-team women's collegiate four race, OU claimed four of the top six spots. The Oklahoma B boat secured first place with a time of 16:37.99, Oklahoma's A boat was second with a 16:39.29, the Oklahoma C boat was fourth with a 16:52.06 and the Oklahoma D boat took sixth with a 17:09.34.

Eighth-year OU head coach Leeanne Crain said she is proud of the effort her squad showed on Saturday.

"The team raced hard and I'm proud of their effort as a whole," Crain said. "We fell a little short of our performance goal in the eights race but the team rallied and came back strong in the fours. That was great to see!"

OU competed three boats in the OGE Night Sprints eight race and three in the four contest. In the eights matchup, the Oklahoma B boat finished in second place with a time of 1:30:78. The A boat finished in third at 1:31:88 and the C boat in fourth with a time of 1:36:32. The OU B boat won the collegiate fours race with a 1:40:23 and the Sooners' C lineup finished in second at 1:42:48. The Oklahoma A boat placed fourth with a time of 1:43:67.

The Sooners will race 12 boats Sunday morning in the open pairs at 8:40 a.m.
