AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team came out of the gate strong at No. 2 Texas before falling, 3-1, at Gregory Gym on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners won the first set before falling in each of the next three to drop to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 on the season. The Longhorns improved to 15-1 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in league play.
Oklahoma, which swept No. 2 Texas in Austin on October 25, 2014, opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first. The Longhorns evened the match, helped in large part by a 12-4 run, at a set apiece. The Sooners attempted to rally late with a 6-2 win, but ultimately went into the break with Texas claiming the set, 25-20.
Following intermission, the Longhorns dominated the third set, 25-13, hitting .478 and won the fourth, 25-18.
Amy Neal led the Texas attack that hit .331 to Oklahoma's .246 with a match-high 20 kills on a .298 attack rate. Big 12 Preseason Co-Players of the Year Chiaka Ogbogu totaled 12 kills and hit .346 with 10 blocks for the Longhorns, while senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) tallied 12 kills and hit .300 for the Sooners.
Six players finished with six kills or more for Oklahoma. Junior outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) and redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) joined Holst in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. Gardiner notched her team-leading eighth double-double with a 10-dig effort, while Ward recorded her seventh with a team-high 11 digs.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) registered her third double-double of the season in a 22-assists, 10-dig effort. Freshman Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) contributed 20 assists. For Texas, Chloe Collins led the offense with 43 assists with 11 digs and four blocks.
Oklahoma totaled 11 service aces for its eighth match of the season in double figures. The Sooners are 1-7 in such matches, including 1-3 in the Big 12.
OU returns home for a match on Friday, October 16 against Kansas State at 6:00 pm.
