CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team had its five-match win streak snapped in a 3-1 loss at No. 13 North Carolina at Carmichael Arena, Friday evening. The Sooners dropped to 9-3, while the Tar Heels improved to 8-1.
Oklahoma got off to a slow start with 25-14 and 25-16 losses in the first two sets before winning the third, 25-22. UNC claimed the fourth set, 25-18.
After the Tar Heels won the first, the two teams were tied. 9-9, in the second before UNC used a 16-7 run to win the set. In the third, OU head coach Santiago Restrepo made major changes to his lineup. Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) moved to libero to replace freshman Emma Kelly (Houston, Texas) and redshirt-sophomore Summer Cole (DeSoto, Texas) was inserted at middle blocker.
Oklahoma hit a collective .302 in the third set with three players contributing four kills. The Sooners totaled four blocks and held the Tar Heels to a .156 attack rate in the set.
For the match, North Carolina's Tatiana Durr led all players with 15 kills. Lauren McAdoo and Paige Neuenfeldt each reached double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Junior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) and freshman middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) led the OU attack with 13 kills, apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Kimmy Gardiner (Grapevine, Texas) added 10 kills.
Junior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) notched her second double-double of the season with 37 assists and 11 digs. Ward matched her for the team-lead in digs at 11.
Jordyn Schnabl and Abigail Curry shared time at setter for UNC. Schnabl totaled a team-high 23 assists, while Curry added 19.
The Sooners' weekend wraps up with a 5:30 pm CT match at Duke on Saturday evening.
