OU Rowing Announces Novice Roster

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma rowing head coach Leanne Crain and novice coach John Gartin announced the Sooners' 2014-15 novice rowing roster on Thursday.

Starting with over 135 OU students at the tryout information meeting, the prospective rowers participated in tryouts at the beginning of the school year, culminating in the selection of 52 women invited to join the defending Big 12 and Conference USA champions for the upcoming season.

"We are excited to welcome our newest members of the novice team,” said Crain. “Throughout the tryout process, these individuals stood out as having potential to succeed as collegiate rowers and we're all looking forward to what they can accomplish out on the race course this season."

The newest novices are akin to walk-ons in other sports, paying their own way while competing as a full-fledged Sooner student-athlete.

“I am really excited about the novices joining the Oklahoma rowing program this year,” said Gartin. “They are already putting in a lot of effort and attention to learning the sport. It has been great to see how coachable they are in just the short time I have gotten to know them.

“Also, the entire group has a very good athletic foundation and that is going to allow the coaches to build a strong rowing engine in each of these student-athletes. It is going to be a real joy teaching them and watching their development this year!”

Oklahoma kicks off the fall season in Oklahoma City at the Head of the Oklahoma, Oct. 5-6.
