NORMAN, Okla. -- With a two-round 722 (+2), the Oklahoma men's golf team sits in seventh place at the three-day, 54-hole Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California. The tournament is being played at the iconic par-72, 7,040-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The eight-team tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt, includes four Big 12 and four SEC squads. Each team is playing with six golfers, with the low five scores counting toward the team total.
The Sooners, who are ranked No. 11 according to the GCAA Coaches Preseason Poll, began the day in third place before recording a 3-over-par 363 on Saturday.
No. 5 Georgia is in first place with a 710 (-10), leading TCU and Texas Tech by a stroke. No. 12 South Carolina is fourth at 6 under par, while Vanderbilt is fifth with a 717 (-3). No. 21 Arkansas finished the day in sixth with an even-par 720, and No. 1 Oklahoma State is in eighth with a 735 (+15).
"Overall it was not a great team day," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We keep getting off to great starts, but the back nine is killing us. We will bounce back tomorrow and finish strong."
OU sophomore Max McGreevy and freshman Grant Hirschman are tied for ninth place with 2-under-par 142s. On Saturday, McGreevy matched his first round total, a 71 (-1). After registering birdies on three of his first six holes, Hirschman recorded just one bogey in an otherwise clean round, firing a 2-under 70 a day after shooting even par.
One stroke behind McGreevy and Hirschman is Michael Gellerman, who holds a share of 18th place. The OU senior posted a 72 (E) for the second 18 holes, bringing his two-round total to 143 (-1). Gellerman played the front nine at 3 under before recording three bogeys on the back nine.
With a 149 (+5), redshirt junior Luke Kwon is tied for 38th place. Kwon, who is making his first appearance in an OU team event, tallied a 3-over-par 75 on Saturday.
Freshman Griffin Pierce struggled on Saturday, slipping from a tie for ninth place to a tie for 42nd. Pierce shot a second-round 79 (+7), bringing his total to 150 (+6). In 48th place is junior Beau Titsworth, who recorded a 3-over-par 75 and has a two-round 155 (+11).
The final 18 holes of the Carmel Cup are scheduled for Sunday. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
