NORMAN, Okla. -- After the opening round of its 2014-15 season, the Oklahoma men's golf team holds third place at the Carmel Cup with a 359 (-1). The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the iconic par-72, 7,040-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The eight-team tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt, includes four Big 12 and four SEC squads. Each team is playing with six golfers, with the low five scores counting toward the team total.
At the end of the round, No. 5 Georgia sits atop the leaderboard with a 352 (-8), seven strokes ahead of the Sooners, who are ranked 11th according to the GCAA Coaches Preseason Poll. Texas Tech holds second at 5 under par, while No. 21 Arkansas and TCU share fourth with scores of 361 (+1). No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 12 South Carolina come in sixth with 362s (+2), and Vanderbilt is eighth with a 364 (+4).
Seniors Michael Gellerman, sophomore Max McGreevy and freshman Griffin Pierce concluded the first 18 holes with 1-under-par 71s and in a tie for ninth place, four strokes off the individual leader.
Gellerman and Pierce recorded scores of 33 (-3) to start the round but both played the back nine at 2 over. McGreevy pocketed a team-high six birdies for the round, including on five of the first nine holes.
With an even-par 72, freshman Grant Hirschman is tied for 19th place. Hirschman opened the round with a double bogey but responded by recording four birdies to two bogeys through the rest of play on Friday.
Redshirt junior Luke Kwon, who is making his first appearance in an OU team event, finished the round with a 74 (+2), while junior Beau Titsworth sits at 8 over par with an 80. Kwon shot four birdies in the round.
OU head coach Ryan Hybl said he is pleased with the performance of his team.
"I really liked what I saw today from our guys," Hybl shared. "We were competitive all day and did a nice job for our first round of the year. We had three guys (Kwon, Pierce and Hirschman) play their first competitive rounds as Sooners, and they did a great job."
The second round of the Carmel Cup is scheduled for Saturday. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
