PENDLEY A TOP-25 FINALIST FOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Shelby Pendley has been named one of the 25 finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. The award is designed to recognize the outstanding athletic achievement by female players across the country.
SWEEP OF UAB BOOSTS RPI RANKING
Stepping out of conference play, OU swept a three-game series from UAB, which entered with the No. 33 RPI in the country.
The opening 11-3, five-inning win was highlighted by the return of Lauren Chamberlain, who missed the previous 23 games with a back injury. She was 2-2 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. In game two of a doubleheader, Shelby Pendley tied a school record with two triples and drove in five runs in an 8-4 victory. It was the ninth time in program history someone had two triples in a game. A four-run second inning erased an early deficit, and Brittany Williams delivered the go-ahead single in the fourth to help give OU a 6-4 win and complete the sweep.
SOONERS TAKE MIDWEEK NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
A six-run third inning, highlighted by a Shelby Pendley grand slam, broke open a scoreless game as Oklahoma cruised to a 8-0, five-inning victory over Central Arkansas Tuesday. Pendley also had a career-high five strikeouts to combine with starter Georgia Casey on the shutout.
Wednesday, Kelsey Stevens was three outs away from her first no-hitter at OU and finished with a one-hitter as Oklahoma shut out North Texas, 3-0. The only baserunners Stevens allowed were a walk to lead off the second inning and a single to start the seventh. In between, she retired all 15 batters she faced. Georgia Casey hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Brittany Williams added a solo shot an inning later.
OU WINS ANOTHER BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE
For three straight weekends, the first-place Sooners took on the team right behind them in the Big 12 standings. In nine such contests, Oklahoma went 7-2, putting the Sooners in position to win an unprecedented third staight Big 12 title. No team has won three consecutive league champsionships, and back-to-back crowns have only happened three times (Oklahoma in '99-00, Texas in '02-03 and Oklahoma in '12-13).
On April 4-6, the 4-0 Sooners swept a three-game series, including a pair of run-rule wins, against a Kansas team that entered 3-0. April 11-13, OU was 7-0 when it visited Baylor, which was 3-1. The Sooners then took two of three games from the Bears. This past weekend, the 9-1 Sooners welcomed in 6-1 Texas and proceeded to take two of three games.
