Head coach Patty GassoOklahoma vs. Liberty and Western IllinoisMarch 7, 2014On her team's stolen-base success:“Well, what's nice is that you can do it throughout your lineup, and it's not just one [player]. A lot of times you'll get to one team and one kid has a majority of their stolen bases. What's nice is that it can happen at any time. It's just something that we work on in practice. It's also creating momentum for your team. Putting runners in scoring position is tremendous. It's huge for us. It's something we know how to do and we try to do it as much as possible.”
On scoring nine runs on only seven hits against Western Illinois:“I don't think we were slowed down. I think when you look at our bases on balls, we aren't getting hits because we're walking eight times. I think the numbers--the line is deceiving. We absolutely crushed the ball in that game. When there were hard-hit outs, balls to the fence, I though that was one of the better games I've seen us swing. I like what we did, although it's showing that we had seven hits. RBIs—Whitney Ellis had four, Georgia [Casey] had two—throughout the lineup people were picking up RBIs. It's bases on balls with a combination of hits, stolen bases—it was very good to see that.”
On her pitchers' development so far:“We're getting there. I thought Kelsey [Stevens] threw pretty well tonight with eight strikeouts. We're just throwing a little too many pitches. She threw 113 pitches tonight, and a pitcher that's really efficient is maybe in the 60s or 70s. Throwing a lot is a lot of strain on the arm. We've got to get ahead in the count and that's something that we're continuing to work on. I thought Taylor Dewbery came in in the first game and did a nice job of ending that game. And then
Leslie Miller got some groundouts when we needed them, so it was pretty—I don't think
Georgia Casey was herself in that first game, but on the pitching side I think they did a good job.”
On her team's approach going into the Tulsa game:“They have one of the best pitchers in the country in Aimee Creger, so our approach is going to be short to the ball. We want to really have a good eye at the plate because she does have more than a few bases on balls, but we can't overswing. Her power will do the work for us, so our job is just to stay short. The pitchers have to keep their hitters off-balance, because they're good at hitting too.”
On visiting the White House:“We had heard that we weren't going to get that opportunity, and now that we are we're extremely excited. It all came really fast on us, but it's a trip of a lifetime, and they're just thrilled to not only be there and see it all but to represent the University of Oklahoma. It means so much to us that we are standing there representing this university. There's a lot of meaning behind it.”
