NORMAN -- After the first two rounds of the inaugural Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, the No. 25 University of Oklahoma men's golf team sits in fourth place, four strokes off the lead. The 54-hole, two-day event is being played at the historic par-70, 7,204-yard Colonial Country Club.
Against the 12-team field, the Sooners shot a 36-hole 572 (+12) on Monday. They opened the event with an impressive 1-over-par 281 and tied for first before slipping in the second round, carding a 291 (+11).
The tournament, also referred to as the Swoosh Invitational, features some stout competition, with 10 teams ranked within the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, including six in the top 25. All participating schools are elite collegiate programs sponsored by Nike Golf.
No. 20 Oregon sits atop the leaderboard with a 568 (+8), while No. 42 Washington is in second place at 10 over. No. 29 Texas holds third place with an 11-over 571, and No. 10 Stanford rounds out the top five with a 574 (+14). Oregon's Thomas Lim is the individual leader with a 9-under 131.
Leading the Sooners is Michael Gellerman, whose two-round 139 (-1) has him in fourth place out of 60 competitors. The senior opened the day with an even-par 70 before adding a 1-under 69 in the afternoon. Gellerman pocketed seven birdies between the two rounds, including on his first three holes (No. 10, 11 and 12) of the second round.
With a 2-over-par 142, sophomore Max McGreevy holds ninth place. McGreevy carded scores of 70 (E) and 72 (+2) in the first and second rounds, respectively. For the 36 holes played Monday, McGreevy shot eight birdies, including three straight to conclude the second round.
Junior Luke Kwon, playing in his second team event in his OU career, shares 10th place. Kwon tallied a 143 (+3) on Monday, including a 69 (-1) in round one and a 74 (+4) to close the day. He recorded birdies on six holes during the first round and two more in the afternoon.
Freshman Grant Hirschman shot a 2-over 72 and 6-over 76 en route to a 36-hole 148 (+8), while junior Beau Titsworth recorded scores of 79 (+9) and 80 (+10) for a 19-over-par 159. Hirschman is tied for 28th place, and Titsworth is 57th.
Sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said he is impressed with the way his squad played on Monday and is looking forward to the final round of competition.
"It was a long day at Colonial, but it was a successful one for sure," Hybl said. "Gellerman played solid all day as well as Kwon and McGreevy. Max finished with three straight birdies after a long day, and that was impressive. We put ourselves with a chance tomorrow, and that's what we were looking for. Tomorrow should be fun."
The final round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational is slated for 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday. The Sooners will be paired with Stanford and Duke and tee off from hole No. 1. Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
