AUSTIN, Texas -- The Oklahoma rowing novice team traveled to Austin, Texas on Saturday to compete at the Head of the Colorado. OU entered a total of four boats between two races and each of the four recorded top five finishes at the regatta, including a first and second place finish in the women's second novice eight race.
“We had a very solid day of racing,” said OU assistant coach John Gartin. “I was really proud of how much the Oklahoma novices learned and improved today on and off the water. It was a great test and we showed good speed against some quality crews in Texas and SMU.
“There is certainly more work to be done and speed to be found, but today was a great regatta for Oklahoma. It will be exciting to see us racing at the Head of the Hooch next week!”
The Sooners got their weekend underway shortly after noon with the women's novice eight event. Despite only three boats entering the race, OU captured the top two spots. The Crimson and Cream's “A” boat was the first to cross the line with a time of 16:52.7 followed by the squad's “B” boat which claimed second with a mark of 17:31.4, besting SMU's third place team by nearly 15 seconds.
Oklahoma continued its strong showing in the first novice eight competition just over an hour later, placing each of its two boats in the top five in the 12 team field. OU's “A” crew completed the race in 15:52.7 for a third place finish behind SMU (15:23.1) and Texas (15:50.1). The Crimson and Cream's “B” boat in the race rounded out the top five, finishing in 16:55.7.
The Sooner rowing squad will be back in action next weekend, as the team will travel to the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 1.
