Novices to Compete at Head of the Colorado

TwitterNORMAN – The University of Oklahoma novice rowing squad travels to Austin, Texas this weekend to race in the Head of the Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Austin Rowing Club.
“We are very excited to be heading to the Head of the Colorado with our 2014 novice class of rowers,” said OU assistant coach John Gartin. “They have been working tremendously hard the past weeks and are excited to test themselves at this race, the first ever regatta for many of them.
“It is a great starting point to see where we are at in our development as well as just to simply race with their teammates. The Head of the Colorado is a fun race and a great springboard for the rest of our fall racing.”
The team is looking to gain valuable experience in just its second competition of the season, as the squad opened the year three weeks ago in Oklahoma City at the Head of the Oklahoma.
The Sooners will enter two boats in the second novice eight race at 12:13 p.m. CT to start the weekend. A little over an hour later Oklahoma will have two more boats compete in the first novice eight race that is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Head of the Colorado, also known as the PumpkinHead Regatta, is a 5,000 meter rowing head race held annually on the last Saturday of October. Austin Rowing Club has hosted this regatta since the mid-1980s. 2014 marks the 30th annual PumpkinHead Regatta. A USRowing registered regatta, this event is open to rowers who are USRowing members, or racing for an organization that is a USRowing member.
