Rowing Opens at Head of the Oklahoma

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma rowing team opens the 2014-15 campaign at the Head of the Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Boathouse District on the Oklahoma River.

“The team is excited to open the fall season at home this weekend," said head coach Leeanne Crain. "This is the first time USC has come to Oklahoma City to race, so we're looking forward to the challenge of racing one of the best programs in the country.”

The back-to-back defending Big 12 and Conference USA champions will compete against a number of high quality programs in the season-opening competition. Some of the notable programs include USC, Kansas State, Southern Methodist, Rhode Island, Tulsa, Central Oklahoma and the hosts of the event Oklahoma City.

The Sooners will enter two boats in the varsity eight race at 12:30 p.m. CT to kick off the season. Later in the afternoon OU will have two boats compete in the varsity four event scheduled for 4:20 p.m. followed by three boats in the novice eight race at approximately 4:45 p.m.

The Crimson and Cream wrap up the opener on Saturday evening with the night sprints. The varsity eight sprints have a tentative start time of 7:45 p.m. and the varsity four sprints are expected to begin around 9:35 p.m. to conclude the day.

The Head of the Oklahoma includes 2.5 mile head racing during the day and 500m OGE NightSprints Saturday evening. The 10th annual Oklahoma Regatta Festival goes from Oct. 2-5 and events include collegiate, masters, and junior rowing as well as kayak and dragon boat racing.
