NORMAN, Okla. -- Through 36 holes at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, the University of Oklahoma men's golf team sits in second place with a 573 (+5). The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at The Ohio State University Golf Club's 7,455-yard, par-71 Scarlet Course located in Columbus, Ohio.
The Sooners, who are ranked No. 10 in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll, sit 12 strokes behind No. 5 California and four clear of No. 6 Oklahoma State. They hold a 13-stroke lead over fourth-place Purdue.
Against a 12-team field, OU posted a score of 291 (+7) in Sunday's first round, followed by a two-under 282 for the second 18 holes. The Sooners were paired with California and Kent State for the day.
“It was a great day for us,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Cal is so good, and it was fun to play with them today. We have a chance to go compete tomorrow in the final group, and the guys are excited about the opportunity.”
Leading the way for the Sooners are junior Charlie Saxon and freshman Max McGreevy, who posted two-round scores of 140 (-2). The duo is tied for fourth place and sits two strokes behind leader Brandon Hagy of California.
Saxon shot a 1-under 70 in both of Sunday's rounds. He carded six birdies on the day, including on holes No. 10, 11 and 12, his first three holes of round two.
For the first 18 holes, McGreevy carded a 72 (+1), with an eagle on the par-5 hole No. 4. Sunday afternoon, McGreevy fired a career-low 68 (-3) and shot five birdies.
“Max and Charlie both had solid days, and we are hoping that everyone can get under par tomorrow,” Hybl said.
With a two-round 146 (+4), Michael Schoolcraft shares 16th place. The senior shot a 3-over 74 in the first round, followed by a 72 (+1). In Sunday's second round, Schoolcraft recorded five birdies.
Tied for 22nd place with a score of 148 (+6) are junior Michael Gellerman and sophomore Beau Titsworth. Gellerman started the day with a 5-over-par 76 but improved in the second round, posting a 72 (+1). Titsworth shot a 75 (+4) and a 73 (+2) in the first and second rounds, respectively.
The final round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational is slated for Monday, with the Sooners paired with California and Oklahoma State. OU's tee times will begin at 9:05 a.m. ET from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
