WCWS CHAMPIONSHIP - GAME TWO
|
|
Hopefully, you've caught your breath.
The Oklahoma softball team's 12-inning walk-off win in game one of the best-of-three NCAA Women's College World Series Championship certainly provided enough drama for the entire series, but the Sooners still need to win one more game to be crowned national champions.
They get that opportunity tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN in game two against the Lady Vols. If it's anything like the wild affair in game one, fans are in for a treat.
Head coach Patty Gasso called Monday's battle "the greatest game I've ever been a part of." Both teams went scoreless for 10 innings; the respective pitchers, Keilani Ricketts for OU and Ellen Renfroe for Tennessee, both stubbornly refusing to budge.
Then, in the 11th, Tennessee put two on and Madison Shipman smacked a home run that left the Sooners in a 3-0 hole. With Renfroe seemingly untouchable, scoring three runs seemed like climbing Mt. Everest, if Mt. Everest on the moon.
And climb it they did. Ricketts popped-up for a sure out, but the ball moved wildly in the wind and she ended up with a double. Brittany Williams hit Ricketts home with a double for OU's first run. If that didn't hint at some Sooner Magic, then Oklahoma putting two more on the board in the 11th to tie the game certainly did.
All that gave Chamberlain the opportunity to hit the walk-off home run in the 12th inning that landed beyond the fence in left field, and somewhere in Sooner history.
So, it was a magical game. But Oklahoma now must put it behind them, and focus on winning another. Deep breaths. Counting backwards from 10. Yoga. Whatever it takes to bring the adrenaline down, and the focus level up.
If they do, a second national championship for Sooner Softball is likely to take your breath away again.
