Just four races remained Saturday in Indianapolis when the second varsity eight's Division I C/D semifinal got underway as winds increased and waves got bigger. Oklahoma and Wisconsin took in too much water and could not finish the race. While the remaining three crews were able to finish, the results were not counted and the race will be run again Sunday.
Each of OU's three boats were supposed to compete in the C/D semifinal for a chance to race in Sunday's third final and a top-18 final ranking. In the C/D semifinals, the top three crews in the five-team race advance to the third final.
Oklahoma's varsity eight finished second in the final completed race of the day. The Sooners' varsity four semifinal was postponed to Sunday in addition to the second varsity eight.
In the second varsity eight, the five crews raced through large waves and occasional whitecaps before Wisconsin took in too much water and couldn't row past the 750 meter mark. In second at the time, Oklahoma swamped 1,200 meters in. At the time the waves increased and UW stopped, Cornell was leading and Gonzaga was in a tight race with OU and UW for the final two spots in Sunday's third final. The race was not stopped and Cornell, Gonzaga and Marist were the three crews that finished.
In the varsity eight's semifinal, Oklahoma, Washington State and Wisconsin established an open-water lead over Rhode Island and Marist by the 500 meter mark. WSU had the lead with OU close behind, but the Cougars extended their lead and finished with an open water win. The Sooners came in second in 8:02.15 with open water in front of the Badgers. OU, WSU and UW all advanced to tomorrow's C finals.
Oklahoma's second varsity eight and varsity four open Sunday's racing with the C/D semifinals at 7 a.m. CT. The finals schedule has been adjusted and OU will race at 7:40 a.m. in the varsity eight third final and between 9:20-9:50 in the third or fourth final of the second varsity eight and varsity four. Fans can keep track of all the action on the final two days with live video and live results from Indianapolis.
The final standings of the 22-team Division I championship will be determined by the placement of each team's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four crews. Points will be awarded according to a boat's finish in the event's final.
