NORMAN, Okla. -- Two current members of  the University of Oklahoma men's golf program advanced through a local U.S. Open Qualifier after 18 holes Monday at the 7,412-yard, par-71 Oak Tree National course in Edmond, Okla.

Seventy-nine players competed for five spots in an upcoming sectional qualifier, and OU senior Abraham Ancer and head coach Ryan Hybl both advanced to play June 3 (site TDB).

By posting a 66 (-5), Ancer claimed the top spot in the qualifier. Ancer eagled the par-5 fifth hole and recorded seven birdies in his round.

"I knew I had to play really well and told myself that I was going to go out there and have fun," Ancer said. "I managed to do that and felt really calm out there. I'm obviously really excited to advance to sectionals, but I know the focus goes toward the (OU team's upcoming) NCAA Regional."

Hybl tied for third with a 2-under 69 after carding three birdies and an eagle on hole No. 16.

"We are going to have to go play some good golf to have the chance to move on," Hybl said. "If we go out and play well, who knows what could happen? We can't get to Merion [Golf Club] without making it past this first step."

OU freshman Beau Titsworth is an alternate after tying for seventh place at 1 over par.

The 2013 U.S. Open will be played June 10-16 at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Next up for the OU men's golf team is a trip to NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla.  The Sooners are the No. 5 seed at the site and will compete May 16-18 for a trip to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 28-June 2 in Atlanta, Ga.
