Pro Sooners | Stoops' Era Draft Picks | OU All-Time Draft Picks | OU First-Rounders | OU Draft Notes |
![]() Seven players from the University of Oklahoma were selected in the 2012 NFL Draft. Receiver Ryan Broyles, the first Sooner picked, went to the Detroit Lions in the second round. The Lions went on to draft two more from Oklahoma, linebackers Ronnell Lewis in the fourth and Travis Lewis in the seventh. Two Sooners returned home with offensive tackle Donald Stephenson drafted by Kansas City in the third round and tight end James Hanna to the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth. Corner Jamell Fleming headed to Arizona and the Cardinals in the third round while defensive end Frank Alexander was selected by Carolina in the fourth. Fifty-nine players have now been drafted during the Bob Stoops' era at OU and 357 since the NFL introduced the draft in 1936. Since that time, OU has been the most consistent program in the nation in supplying talent to the pros. A Sooner has been selected in 75 of the 77 NFL Drafts (only misses were in 1995 and 1962). Notre Dame (74 of 77) and USC (72 of 77) follow OU. - - - - - - - - - - RYAN BROYLES OU wide receiver Ryan Broyles was picked by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the NFL Draft. Broyles was the first Sooner selected in the 2012 Draft, 351st all-time OU player drafted, 53rd player drafted in the Stoops' era, 21st receiver drafted from OU all-time and 18th Sooner picked all-time by the Lions. Twitter reaction: @RyanBroyles | @DetroitLionsNFL ![]() Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "Ryan's accomplishments speak for themselves, and while he's very gifted, he also earned his accolades through hard work and dedication. That's even more obvious now that he has returned so quickly from an injury. He's smart, he makes spectacular catches and he's dangerous as a ball-carrier, but he's equally valuable off the field as a humble teammate and in the way he represents the program." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Detroit GM Martin Mayhew: "(Broyles was the) best player on our board. Very productive guy; 48-career touchdowns - just tremendous production of a four-year career. Fits our offense, will be a great fit for us and really helps our offensive skill. (He's) another receiving weapon for our QB and we fill great about the pick." From the Orlando Sentinel: "Broyles shot back up draft boards after running a 40-yard dash in the mid-4.5-second range just five months removed from ACL surgery. A bit of a gamble, the Lions have a potential steal if Broyles fully recovers his pre-injury speed. He owns the NCAA record with 349 career receptions and is second with 4,586 yards." - - - - - - - - - - DONALD STEPHENSON OT Donald Stephenson was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the NFL Draft. Stephenson was the second Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 352nd all-time OU player drafted, 54th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 46th offensive tackle drafted from OU all-time and sixth Sooner picked all-time by the Chiefs. Twitter reaction: @Don59Wayne | @kcchiefs Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "Donald's career was a crescendo. His productivity got a little better with each game and his last two years in our program were particularly productive. We take a lot of pride in the way we protect our quarterbacks, and Donald had great responsibility while playing left tackle last season. He grew into that role and handled it well for us. I think he'll continue to grow as a professional." From the Chicago Tribune: " Few prospects have more raw upside than Stephenson, a better athlete than football player who needs a full season in the weight room and film room before he's a major factor. Has real steal potential." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - - - - - - - - - - JAMELL FLEMING OU defensive back Jamell Fleming was picked by the Arizona Cardinals in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. Fleming was the third Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 353rd all-time OU player drafted, 55th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 47th defensive back drafted from OU all-time and 38th Sooner picked all-time by the Cardinals. Twitter reaction: @JamellFleming | @AZCardinals ![]() Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "Jamell's athletic ability and awareness have made him an outstanding player. He had a flare for the big play while he was in our program, and those are moments that can change the outcome of a game. As a coach, you appreciate players who take care of business on every down and yet are capable of turning the momentum quickly. I think his skill set translates well to the NFL because his attributes, including the ability to excel in bump and run, are very similar to what you see in that league's successful corners." From the Chicago Tribune: "More of a battler than a technically sound corner, Fleming tested as the strongest cornerback at the Combine with 23 reps of 225 pounds to go with a very good size-speed combination." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - - - - - - - - - - FRANK ALEXANDER Oklahoma's Frank Alexander was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the 4th round of the NFL Draft. Alexander was the fourth Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 354th all-time OU player drafted, 56th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 16th defensive end drafted from OU all-time and second Sooner picked all-time by the Panthers. Twitter reaction: @frankalex84 | @Panthers Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "Frank improved his effectiveness and consistency over the course of his career. That's one of the most encouraging aspects of his move into professional football. He's continuing to get better, which tells me that he's going to become even more valuable to a team with age and experience. And you can see from his productivity in our program, he's already pretty good." Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney: "(Alexander) makes plays. He was a guy we said if we could get, we would make a trade." From the Chicago Tribune: "The Panthers still have a ways to go on the defensive line, but Alexander brings the strength to set the edge with some natural rush skills" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - - - - - - - - - - RONNELL LEWIS Oklahoma's Ronnell Lewis was picked by the Detroit Lions in the 4th round of the NFL Draft. Lewis was the fifth Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 355th all-time OU player drafted, 57th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 40th linebacker drafted from OU all-time and 19th Sooner picked all-time by the Lions. Twitter reaction: @rlewis2456 | @DetroitLionsNFL ![]() Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "Ronnell is one of athletes that comes along somewhat infrequently. He is a great combination of size, speed and strength that will translate well to the NFL. As a defensive end, he was impressive as a speed rusher, but also overpowered blockers at time. It wasn't unusual to see him up the field disrupting opposing offenses. He also was an outstanding special teams player, particularly on kickoff coverage. Ronnell is versatile and could have played one more year of college ball so his upside could be substantial." ![]() From the Chicago Tribune: "Left school as a junior and was more of a pass-rushing defensive end for the Sooners. He could be groomed as a potential replacement for franchise player Cliff Avril or used exclusively as a nickel package pass rusher." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - - - - - - - - - - JAMES HANNA Oklahoma TE James Hanna was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 6th round of the NFL Draft. Hanna was the sixth Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 356th all-time OU player drafted, 58th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 12th tight end drafted from OU all-time and 11th Sooner picked all-time by the Cowboys. Twitter reaction: @jhanna82 | @dallascowboys ![]() Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops: "The thing that makes James so intriguing is that he converted from wide receiver in high school to tight end in college. His speed and route-running still resemble what he learned as a receiver, but he has added the size now to create favorable matchups. I also think athletic ability is sometimes underrated for blockers, and he has that ability. He can get to defenders and stay locked on through a play. James is unique and could flourish in the right scheme." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - - - - - - - - - - TRAVIS LEWIS OU's Travis Lewis was picked by the Detroit Lions (the third Sooner for the franchise in this draft) in the 7th round. Lewis was the seventh Sooner selected in the 2012 draft, 357th all-time OU player drafted, 59th player drafted in the Stoops' era, 41st linebacker drafted from OU all-time and 20th Sooner picked all-time by the Lions. Twitter reaction: @TravisLewis28 | @DetroitLionsNFL Coach Stoops: "Travis has been a leader for this program since stepping on to campus. When you have 144 tackles as a freshman, it shows that you have great ability and instincts. His workmanlike approach and the time he puts in studying the game sets him apart. He has a genuine desire to be a great player himself, but wants to be that kind of player within the framework of a great team." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: "I want to be that guy who picks up a team," Lewis said. "When you're having a hard time and can't get off the field, you have to be the guy who says, `Hey, let's go!' I feel like I've done that and it'll continue to progress at the next level because that's what I want to be. I want to be a ..." ![]() ![]() OU DRAFT HEADLINES ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() Guerin Emig of the Tulsa World: "About as good as it gets for Broyles - one of the most cerebral young players on the board paired with one of the most cerebral quarterbacks in recent NFL history. Put another way: Being drafted by the Peyton Manning Broncos sure beats being drafted by the Tim Tebow version. At least..." ![]() ![]() OU DRAFT HEADLINES ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() The NCAA career leader in receptions, Ryan Broyles, worked out Thursday inside Oklahoma's Everest Training Center in front of scouts representing 12 different NFL franchises. Less than five months after suffering a torn ACL in Oklahoma's Nov. 5 win over Texas A&M, Broyles clocked a time of 4.57 in the 40-yard dash. The two-time All-American also recorded a vertical leap of 32.5 inches while weighing in at 188 pounds, his listed playing weight as a senior at Oklahoma, in his biggest test since his injury. "I feel like today I showed up and showed I've been working hard. I have definitely been timing well. The scouts said the same thing," said Broyles. "They don't expect me to be full speed and I don't expect the same. Being competitive, I wish it was in the 4.3 range. That's not the scenario. It just shows that I am working hard. I am getting my lateral movement back as well." ![]() ![]()

SoonerSports.com webcast the event live with a mic on strength coach Jerry Schmidt. Aside from the physical testing, scouts put the players through several position drills. Below are the results from OU's Pro Day testing. If a player's results are not included in a specific drill's listing, this means they did not take part. The 2012 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 26-28 in New York City. SoonerSports.com will have full coverage throughout the event as Sooners are selected. Oklahoma ranks No. 4 all-time in total number of players drafted. OU has supplied 350 players since 1937.
