Inspiring champions today... preparing leaders for tomorrow.

The most visible lines in the mission statement for the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department... a mission statement that all employees of the department strive to live by while working for and with OU's student-athletes. One former student-athlete exemplified this motto in his daily life.

Former OU track and field student-athlete and U.S. Army 1st Lt. David Wright II paid the ultimate sacrifice on September 14, 2009, when he and another soldier were killed after a roadside bomb hit their vehicle in southern Afghanistan.

The 2004 All-Big 12 honoree in the 110-meter hurdles graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2006 before enlisting in the Army and quickly earning the respect of those around him as a prepared leader.

Wright was given the Army Achievement Award and designated the Soldier of the Cycle for finishing at the top of his basic training class. He completed officer's training school at Fort Benning.

While Wright may be gone, the memory of the prepared leader continues to inspire champions today.
