NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after one round at the 54-hole NCAA Tallahassee Regional, which is being played at the 6,965-yard, par-72 Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

The 25th-ranked Sooners, who are competing as the No. 5 seed in the 13-team tournament, carded an opening-round 284 (-4). They sit 12 strokes behind leader North Florida, the No. 4 seed. OU, making its third straight NCAA Regional appearance and 41st overall, teed off from hole No. 10.

"We didn't kill ourselves today, but we sure made it tougher for us to move on," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Luckily we have two more days to fight back and to prove our worthiness for a spot. Tomorrow will be a big day for us."

After the first 18 holes of competition, senior Abraham Ancer and junior Michael Schoolcraft both sit in the top 10 after recording under-par rounds.

Ancer, who eagled the par-5 18th hole, also pocketed four birdies and just one bogey en route to a 67 (-5), matching his season-low round. He is tied for fourth place, just two strokes off the lead.

With a 4-under-par 68, Schoolcraft shares sixth place. He eagled hole No. 15 and added four birdies.

"Mike and Abe played great today and really pulled us through because the back of the lineup was poor," Hybl said.

Freshman Beau Titsworth shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 49th place. Sophomore Charlie Saxon is one stroke behind Titsworth, carding a 75 (+3). Senior Will Kropp finished the first round at 6 over par.

The regional field consists of 13 teams and 10 individuals. The tournament, one of six NCAA Regionals, features 18 holes each day (Thursday-Saturday) and serves as a preliminary round for the NCAA Championship finals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five teams will advance to the finals, slated for May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.

The second round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional is slated for Friday. OU will tee off from hole No. 10 starting at 7 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
