OU Regular Season Ends

NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Whitney Johnson won the triple jump title at the Ward Haylett Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 40-5.0 effort in the final regular season competition of the 2013 outdoor season.

The Sooners had five competitors in Manhattan, Kan., while another four traveled to Charlottesville, Va., for their final regular season competition.

Johnson, who beat her previous season best by nearly five inches, recorded the best jump on her sixth of six efforts.

Other competitors in Manhattan were Cessily Jones who posted a 12.02 in the 100 to finish fourth, Rachel Bolton tied for third in the pole vault with a 12-5.50 and Everette Favor finished fourth in the pole vault with a 16-6.0.

None of those marks improved previous season marks.

Meanwhile, several middle distance/distance runners competed on Saturday at the Virginia Invitational.

Hilary Krein recorded a 4:23.73 in the 1,500-meter run, Allen Eke posted a 1:54.23 in the 800 and Brandon Doughty finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 9:10.84.

The time for Krein was a season best by nearly four seconds while the other times posted did not improve previously recorded times.

Improving marks was the key in action this weekend as the list of student-athletes who have been accepted to compete in each NCAA Regional will be announced Thursday at noon CDT. The two NCAA regionals will feature the top 48 declared entries in each individual event and while the relays will include the top 24 declared entries. The regionals are scheduled for May 23-25 and the Sooners will travel to the West Regional prelims in Austin, Texas, while the East Regional prelims will be in Greensboro, N.C.

Qualifiers from the regionals will compete in the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
