NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team earned its fourth conference honor in three weeks as the second varsity eight boat was named the Conference USA Boat of the Week, Tuesday.
OU has earned all four conference Boat of the Week honors awarded this season, including three from Conference USA. The Sooners' varsity four claimed this year's first C-USA accolade on March 19 in addition to the second varsity eight's award last week. The varsity eight earned the season's inaugural Big 12 Boat of the Week honors last week as well.
With five Big 12 schools sponsoring rowing, the conference is one team shy of an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championship. Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas and West Virginia also compete in the 11-team Conference USA with Alabama, Old Dominion, SMU, Tennessee, Tulsa and UCF. The winner of the C-USA Championship earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Oklahoma's second varsity eight is 7-3 on the season and has won back-to-back Conference USA honors.
"This lineup has really come together in the early season and they're moving the boat well," OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. "This past weekend's results indicate that they're moving as fast as our first varsity eight, which is a really good problem to have at this point in the season.
"We have three weeks off before we race again, which will give us a chance to shift some people around to see if we can add some speed to our first varsity eight before we travel to Clemson."
The boat was comprised of coxswain Jessica Hogan, Becca Winchester, Olivia Staff, Taylor Gillespie, Marilyn Kozlowski, Jenny O'Grady, Kelsey O'Grady, Heather Morris and Ashley LaFollette.
At the Pac 12 Challenge in Redwood City, Calif., March 30-31, OU beat Oregon State by 11.6 seconds and suffered two close defeats to No. 2 California and No. 9 Stanford.
In addition to the win over Oregon State, the second varsity eight posted OU's closest race against second-ranked Cal and crossed the line in 6:43.8, 7.8 seconds behind the Bears. Against the ninth-ranked Cardinal, the Sooners' race was one of three closely-contested contests between OU and Stanford, but the 2V8 fell by 6.7 seconds on Stanford's home course. A full recap from the Pac 12 Challenge can be found here.
The Sooners return to the water at the Clemson Invitational on April 20-21 in Clemson, S.C.
