NORMAN, Okla. -- After carding a third-round 288 (+4), the No. 45 University of Oklahoma men's golf team claimed its first tournament title of the season, winning the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational Tuesday. The 14-team tournament, which featured five teams ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin Top 50, was played at the 6,765-yard, par-71 Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
OU posted a three-round score of 862 (+10) to finish one stroke ahead of second-place North Texas (ranked No. 38). The Sooners entered Tuesday's final round in second place, three strokes behind North Texas, after posting a two-round 574 (+6) on Monday.
"It is fun to win as a team," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "All of our guys are in good spirits right now even though some didn't play so well. They all pitched in, though, and it's not just about today. It's about all 54 holes."
Leading the way in round three for the Sooners were seniors Will Kropp (-1) and Abraham Ancer (E), who finished in a tie for fifth place with Tulsa's Matt Mabrey and Wichita State's Hunter Sparks. The OU duo finished at even par for the tournament.
"Our two seniors showed great leadership this week," Hybl said. "They both had really solid tournaments, and it was a good team week for us."
Junior Michael Schoolcraft finished in a tie for 16th place with a 219 (+6). It marked Schoolcraft's third top-20 showing of the season.
Claiming his first top-20 finish of the campaign, junior Eduardo Castiello tied for 18th place with a three-round 220 (+7). Freshman Beau Titsworth completed the tournament at 9 over par after posting a final-round 74 (+3), tying him for 30th place.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Michael Gellerman earned his second top-20 showing of the season with a 15th-place finish after shooting a third-round 72 (+1). Gellerman finished the tournament at 5 over par. Freshman Eloy Gonzalez also competed as an individual and finished in 48th place with a 54-hole score of 227 (+14).
The Sooners will return to action Feb. 17 at the three-day Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R.
