Novices Racing at Head of the Colorado

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma rowing novices will have a chance to show off their newfound skills at the Head of the Colorado in Austin, Texas, on Saturday.
The novices, most of whom joined the team and began rowing last month, will race three boats in the annual Head race. One Sooner boat will take off at 12:14 p.m. CT in the second novice 8+ race while two more will begin at 1:31 p.m. CT in the novice 8+ event. Complete boat lineups are listed below.
"I'm excited to see how we line up against Texas this weekend," said novice coach Emma Gresson. "Our training schedule has been a little different from past years and so it will be interesting to see how those changes have affected our racing ability."
Along with Big 12 rival Texas, OU will also compete against boats from SMU and Northwestern State in addition to the LSU, Baylor and Texas A&M rowing clubs.
"This is probably the most athletic group I have had since I started coaching here at OU, so they have great potential," Gresson continued. "There is always a lot of learning in your first race, so finding some valuable things to focus on and work on for the Head of the Hooch next weekend will be vital."
The 2013 course will row through six of the seven bridges of Lady Bird Lake. It starts at the Barton Springs inlet, just east of the Texas Rowing Center and travels through the bridges eastwards. The turns are all gradual and there are lots of great spectator locations on the bridges, near the start at Auditorium Shores, and near the finish at Festival Beach Park.

Oklahoma's fall season, a precursor to the championship spring season, continues at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 2-3.
