NORMAN, Okla. -The 22nd-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team placed seventh in its season opener after recording a 28-over-par 316 in Monday's final round of the 15-team Gopher Invitational in Wayzata, Minn. The Sooners finished with a three-round 912 (+48) at the 7,020-yard, par-72 Spring Hill Golf Course.

Second-ranked California won the eighth-annual event, carding a 2-under 862. The Golden Bears placed three golfers in the top four to finish ahead of second-place SMU by 14 strokes.

Despite a disappointing team performance, the Sooners saw promise in their freshmen.

Beau Titsworth finished in a team-best 15th-place tie after a round that truly tested the field. The freshman started his day with a pair of pars on the eighth and ninth holes, but carded eight bogeys and a single birdie through the remaining 16 holes to finish the round at 7 over. Still, a three-round 224 (+8) earned Titsworth a top-20 finish in his collegiate debut. Titsworth, who entered the day tied for seventh place, finished 11 strokes behind medalist Corey Connors of Kent State.

Abraham Ancer appeared to find his rhythm early in the final round, carding two birdies in his first four holes. However, the Sooners' lone competing senior carded a double bogey on No. 15 and added four bogeys on the front nine. Despite a disappointing event by his standards, Ancer earned his 19th career top-20 finish, tying for 19th out of 77 competitors with a three-round 227 (+11).

Eloy "Chito" Gonzalez had an emotional round to close his debut event. The freshman carded a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole, but followed it with a triple bogey on No. 18. The ace was OU's first since former Sooner Riley Pumphrey recorded one at the 2010 UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational. Gonzalez finished the round at 7 over and finished in a tie for 22nd place.

Junior Michael Schoolcraft and sophomore Michael Gellerman rounded out the Sooners' lineup. Schoolcraft finished in a tie for 52nd at 19 over while Gellerman earned a share of 65th place at 25 over.

The Sooners will be back in action Sept. 21-23 when they travel to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Championship.
