Ancer Falls In Semifinals of Western Amateur Championship

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma men's golfer Abraham Ancer's run at the prestigious Western Amateur Championship finally came to an end Saturday after he fell to eventual match-play champion Chris Williams of Washington on the 19th hole in Highland Park, Ill.
Ancer, who advanced to match play after tying for third place in the stroke play portion of the 156-man tournament, entered the semifinals following separate Friday wins over Chen-Tsung Pan of Washington (15th-ranked amateur in the world and two-time defending event medalist) and Sean Dale of North Florida.
Ancer began Saturday with a birdie on hole No. 1 to take an early lead over Williams, the world's fourth-ranked amateur. He held on to that lead until Williams tied the match with a birdie on No. 7. Ancer pulled ahead on multiple occasions, but Williams responded every time.
After falling behind on the 12th hole, Ancer squared the match when Williams bogeyed No. 16. Ancer had a chance to win the match on hole 18, but narrowly missed a birdie putt, sending the match into extra holes at Exmoor Country Club.
Unfortunately for Ancer, the OU senior-to-be sent his tee shot out of bounds and was unable to recover, and eventually conceded the hole.
"It was a very close match all day long," Ancer said. "We both played well, but unfortunately, one bad swing ended my match on the first playoff hole."
