Ancer Advances to Sweet 16 of Western Amateur

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma senior-to-be Abraham Ancer advanced to the match-play portion of the 110th Annual Western Amateur Championship Wednesday at the Exmoor Country Club course in Highland Park, Ill.
Ancer, who led the 156-man field through 36 holes, completed the 72-hole stroke-play qualifying segment of the event with rounds of 69, 68, 72 and 67. His 12-under 276 put him in a tie for third place and four strokes clear of the 16th-place cutoff.
"I am just having a lot of fun out here," Ancer said. "It is a great course and a very strong field."
The elite field includes six of the world's top 10 amateurs, as well as four of the top six. Players from 34 states and 11 countries have made their way to Illinois for the marquee invitational event.
Through 72 holes, Ancer has recorded 19 birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. His second-round 68 included four birdies and no bogeys. In the fourth round, he tallied seven birdies and just two bogeys.
"I've been hitting the ball really well and some putts are going in," Ancer said. "In match play, things should get very interesting. My goal is to have fun and make a bunch of birdies, then I will see where I finish."
Ancer joins an elite group in the Sweet 16. Amateur golfers advancing to this stage of the event have gone on to win 29 of the last 35 PGA TOUR Player of the Year awards and 12 are in the top 20 on the PGA's career money list.
Former Sooner Riley Pumphrey advanced to the final 54, but was eliminated in the second cut after finishing in 41st place with a four-round 286. Will Kropp (+1) and Michael Schoolcraft (+2) just missed advancing to rounds three and four.
The Sweet 16 and quarterfinal matches will take place Friday, with the semifinals and final set for Saturday. All matches are 18 holes.
