NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma golfer Michael Schoolcraft fell in the round of 64 at the U.S. Amateur Open Wednesday at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Schoolcraft, who finished the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event in a tie for 39th place out of 310 competitors, was defeated by Zack Munroe in an extra hole of match play at the country's premier amateur event.
"Today's loss will hurt for a while," Schoolcraft said. "It was a good match. Both of us played well, but this one will hurt."
Playing on his home course, Schoolcraft fell behind when Munroe carded a birdie on the first hole. Munroe improved his lead to two strokes following a second birdie on the fifth hole. Schoolcraft evened the score after carding a birdie on No. 7 and a Munroe bogey on No. 8.
Schoolcraft went up one stroke with another birdie on the ninth hole, and extended his lead after another Munroe bogey on the 13th hole. The OU junior bogeyed the next hole and Munroe carded a birdie on No. 17 to square the match. Each bogeyed the 18th hole to push the match into sudden death.
Munroe bogeyed on the 19th hole, but Schoolcraft carded a double bogey, ending his U.S. Amateur run.
"The experience was great and the tournament was fun," Schoolcraft said. "At the same time, I am already out in the first round (of match play), so it hurts.”
