OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma's Jessica Shults picked up an RBI as the USA Softball National Team, which also counts OU's Keilani Ricketts as a member of the roster, opened the World Cup of Softball with a 8-0 run-rule win over Puerto Rico Thursday night in Oklahoma City. Shults got the start behind the plate for the United States as the Americans ended the game early in five innings, allowing just one hit to Puerto Rico.
The U.S. scored a run in both the first and second innings before opening the game up with five runs in the third inning. Shults recorded her first RBI of the five-day competition in the five-run inning as she recorded a bases-loaded, two-out walk.
USA sealed the run-rule with a final run in the fourth inning after Amanda Chidester and Jenae Leles rapped back-to-back singles before Christi Orgeron lined a double down the left field line to score Chidester for the eighth and final run.
Ricketts, Shults and the American squad returns to ASA Hall of Fame Stadium Friday evening at 6 p.m. as it takes on Australia.
