NORMAN, Okla. - The 28th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team remains in a tie for fourth place at the NCAA Championships after carding a second-round 292 (+8) Wednesday at the 7,292-yard, par-71 Riviera Country Club course in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Sooners are nine strokes behind first-place Alabama and five strokes behind second-place UCLA, but trail third-place Florida State by just one. Oklahoma is tied in fourth place with North Florida, and is three strokes clear of the eighth-place cutoff to advance to the match play portion of the championship event.
Abraham Ancer remains in the top-10 after carding a 1-over 72 in Wednesday's second round. The junior started the day on the 10th hole and recorded two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine. He started the front side with birdies on the Nos. 1 and 2 holes, but carded back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes. Ancer's two-round 142 (E) has him in a tie for eighth place, five strokes behind leader Thomas Pieters of Illinois.
Michael Schoolcraft had a successful day at Riviera. Schoolcraft started his round with two birdies and a bogey on the back nine. The sophomore birdied the No. 1 hole on the front nine, but bogeyed three of his next four. He recovered with birdies on the seventh and ninth holes to finish with a 1-under 70, OU's best round of the day. Schoolcraft climbed 61 spots to a tie for 37th place with a two-round 146 (+4).
The Sooners had a trio of golfers register a 4-over 75 in the second round.
Junior Will Kropp sat at 1 over through his first 12 holes, but carded two bogeys and a double bogey on consecutive holes. Kropp bounced back with a birdie on No. 8. He fell 12 spots, but remains in the top 20 of the 156-man field with a 2-over 144.
Freshman Michael Gellerman got off to a hot start, birdying his first two holes of the round, but found himself in a rut through the next four holes as he recorded a double bogey and three bogeys. His two-round 149 (+7) has him in a tie for 69th place.
Riley Pumphrey parred 14 holes in the second round, but was slowed by four bogeys and no birdies. The senior sits in a tie for 117th place with an 11-over 153.
Oklahoma continues to lead the three Big 12 squads competing in the championships. Top-ranked Texas finished the second round with a share of 13th place at 17 over par. Texas A&M sits in a tie for 20th at 26 over in the 30-team field.
Oklahoma will be paired with North Florida and Washington and tee off from the No. 1 tee at 2:20 p.m. CT in Thursday's afternoon wave. Live scoring is available on NCAA.com.
