Ricketts Named USA Player of the Year Finalist

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma's Keilani Ricketts has been named one of three finalists for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) announced today. The junior joins two seniors in Cal's Valerie Arioto and Arizona State's Katelyn Boyd as a finalist.

The award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The winner of the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced on May 29 at the Women's College World Series.

The Big 12 Player of the Year, Ricketts is the only player among the three finalists to lead her team in both pitching and hitting, leading the Sooners in both. Ricketts currently ranks eighth in the country with an on-base percentage of .566 and thirteenth with a .853 slugging percentage. The Oklahoma junior is tenth nationally with 48 walks.

In the circle, she ranks fifth in the NCAA with a 1.05 ERA, third with 371 strikeouts and her 31 wins puts her tenth nationally. Ricketts is second in the nation in giving up just 3.64 hits per seven innings. The southpaw has recorded 1,169 career strikeouts, putting her third on the Big 12 career list.

Ricketts is the second member of her family named as a finalist of the award while donning the Oklahoma uniform as Samantha Ricketts became the first Oklahoma finalist for the award in 2007.

Ricketts and the rest of the No. 4 Sooners return to action this weekend as they host No. 13 Arizona in a best-of-three games NCAA Super Regional beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. The two teams return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. with an if necessary game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Fans at Friday's game can enjoy 50 cent hot dogs. Friday's game will also be on ESPNU with Saturday's games on ESPN.
