NORMAN, Okla. -The 30th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team remained in sixth place after Friday's second round of the 2012 NCAA Norman Regional. The Sooners carded a 4-over 292 at the 7,351-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club course and have one round remaining to make a move toward a necessary top-five finish.

Oklahoma climbed as high as second during Friday's round, but finished the day three strokes out of fifth place with a two-round 579 (+3). OU needs to finish in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championship.

"If we come out and play good golf tomorrow, we'll be fine," said OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "If it weren't for our mistakes at the end of today's round, we might be fighting (to win) the tournament right now. But we're not, so we're going to have to fight for everything we've got tomorrow. If we play good golf, we will be OK tomorrow."

No. 13 Washington took over the top spot on the team leaderboard with a 7-under 281 in the second round. No. 23 Florida State, which is four shots behind the Huskies, finished the day in second place with a 4-over 292. Top-ranked Texas, No. 35 Illinois and No. 12 Georgia Tech round out the top five.

Michael Gellerman, who was the only Sooner to finish over par in Thursday's first round (+5), was the only OU golfer to shoot under par on Friday (-5). His remarkable 10-shot turnaround aided the Sooners on a day when his teammates struggled at times.

"Gellerman was awesome," Hybl said of his true freshman from Sterling, Kan. "You could tell he was kind of due. Yesterday he shot 5 over, but he had two really poor holes and that can slap you in the face pretty fast. He hit the ball great yesterday, so it wasn't surprising to me to see him come out and do that today. He was a huge help in offsetting some of the bad mistakes we made coming down the stretch today."

Despite a drastic increase in wind from the previous day -- it was blowing 25-30 miles per hour Friday -- Gellerman carded eight birdies, including five straight on holes seven through 11.

"The wind really started blowing today and it got pretty tough out here," Gellerman said. "It was a grind."

Gellerman's 67 (-5) represented a career-low collegiate round and tied the as the third lowest 18-hole total for the Sooners this season. It was regional's lowest round of the day and one stroke shy of the competitive course record (from the championship tees) set by Texas' Jordan Spieth Thursday. Gellerman climbed 47 spots to a 13th-place tie out of 75 golfers.

"Today I made some putts," said Gellerman. "I actually hit it better yesterday, which is weird. Today I just kind of got hot and made some putts. It was fun."

Michael Schoolcraft turned in the second-best round among OU golfers with his 2-over 74. The sophomore carded three birdies, but added a double bogey and three bogeys. Schoolcraft remained in a tie for 20th place at +2.

Riley Pumphrey scored well on 16 of 18 holes, but double bogeys on 12 and 17 resulted in a 3-over-par 75. The senior fell five spots to a 20th-place tie.

Abraham Ancer was at even par through 15 holes before carding a quadruple bogey on the 16th and a bogey on the 17th. The junior concluded his round with a birdie on No. 18 and shares 28th place at +4.

Will Kropp shot a 5-over 77 Friday and fell 14 spots to a 34th-place tie. The junior stands at +5.

"We just need to go out there, be kind of loose and go play some golf," said Gellerman of Saturday's final round. "It's our home track. It's going to be windy, just like what we're used to. We just need to relax and go have fun. We need a team effort. We need all five guys to be there."

Oklahoma will be paired with Illinois and Georgia Tech Saturday, teeing off from the first hole at 7:50 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
