NORMAN, Okla. — Fresh off breaking the Big 12's single season home run record, Oklahoma freshman Lauren Chamberlain was named the Big 12 Player of the Week the conference announced Monday. The honor is Chamberlain's third this season making her the first freshman in Big 12 history to capture three Player of the Week awards. The first-year Sooner is also the only Big 12 athlete this year to win the award three times.
With Chamberlain's honor, the Oklahoma earned its record 11th Big 12 weekly honor of the season, breaking the previous high of 10 from the 2006 Texas team. Along with Chamberlain's honor, Keilani Ricketts earned six Pitcher of the Week honors and one Player of the Week honor while Georgia Casey was awarded the Player of the Week award on March 20.
Chamberlain becomes the fourth player in Oklahoma history to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week at least three times in the same season as she joined Amber Flores (2009), Heather Scaglione (2004) and Lynette Velazquez (1999) in accomplishing the feat.
Last weekend, Chamberlain broke the Big 12 single season record for home runs as she moved to 25 on the year with three home runs in No. 4 Oklahoma's three-game sweep of Iowa State.
Chamberlain had five RBIs on the weekend with 15 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.500 to lead OU to its third conference sweep. Chamberlain also had a double and a single to go with her three home runs for the Big 12 Champions while walking once and getting hit by a pitch once. The first-year Sooner was successful in her lone stolen base attempt.
