2012 Big 12 Rowing Championship Results
"I certainly didn't expect it to come down to one point separating the top two teams," OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "Our congratulations goes out to Coach Graves and her Texas Longhorns. I'm proud of how we raced today. We pulled off two big wins in the first and third varsity eights, and the races we lost were hard fought. So, while it's heartbreaking to lose a championship by such a close margin, we also know we have room for development and improvement over the final weeks of the regular season."
The varsity eight closed Big 12 competition undefeated during the 2012 Spring season as it won with a time of 6:53.58, beating Texas (6:54.03), Kansas State (7:09.35) and Kansas (7:13.90).
OU's varsity four finished third with a time of 7:58.96 behind Kansas (7:43.69) and Texas (7:53.37) earning 11 points while the second varsity four finished second with a time of 7:59.39 ahead of Kansas (8:10.28) and Kansas State (8:15.22) to earn six points.
The second varsity eight came in second while the varsity eight took out all three Big 12 boats to conclude the Big 12 Rowing Championship. The second varsity eight finished the day with a time of 7:05.32 ahead of Kansas State (7:10.98) and Kansas (7:20.75) to take 26 points.
This was the first ever fully-sponsored Big 12 Rowing Championship in conference history. Texas claimed the Big 12 Title for the fourth straight year in a row.
The Sooners also had three rowers awarded All-Big 12 First Team with Nikki Furmanek, Carly Schueler and Rebecca Staff receiving the honor and Nicole Bladow and Meghan Farrell were awarded All-Big 12 Second Team honors.
OU returns to action on May 12 at the Conference USA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Last year in Oak Ridge, the second varsity eight took a fifth-place finish in the grand final and the varsity eight finished sixth in its grand final.
