NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma rowing team will host the first fully-sponsored Big 12 Rowing Championship this Saturday, April 28 on the Oklahoma River. OU's varsity eight boat was named the No. 1 seed in its event while the second varsity eight, first varsity four and third varsity eight all claimed the No. 2 seed in each respective event. The varsity eight boat enters the weekend undefeated in Big 12 competition this season.

"We are excited to be hosting the 2012 Big 12 Championship, OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "All participating teams have had success in the regular season so we're anticipating a very competitive field in all six events."

The Sooners will field six boats this weekend as they seek their first ever Big 12 Rowing Title. Competition will begin at 9:40 a.m. Saturday with the fourth varsity eight kicking off competition against Kansas and Texas. The third varsity eight boat begins racing at 10 a.m. against all four Big 12 teams and the second varsity four begin at 10:20 a.m. The varsity four takes to the water at 10:40 a.m. and the second varsity eight race at 11 a.m.

Oklahoma's top seeded boat will conclude competition on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. The boat was awarded Big 12 Boat of the Month in March and was named Boat of the Week by Conference USA on March 20 as well as earning the No. 1 seed at the San Diego Crew Classic.

Admission to the event is free. A Big 12 awards ceremony will take place at 11:50 a.m. along with a senior recognition for the student-athletes that will be graduating this spring.

Rowing closed out regular season competition on April 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. where the novice eight beat out No. 3 Michigan and were just two seconds behind No. 6 Ohio State.
