Chamberlain Ties Home Run Record in OU Loss

NORMAN, Okla. -- After No. 5 Oklahoma captured Friday night's 10-inning walk off win over No. 10 Missouri, softball fans knew it would be a dramatic three-game series and Saturday's game lived up to those expectations as extra innings were once again involved in a 4-2 Oklahoma loss in eight innings. . The loss dropped OU to 37-7 and 12-4 in the Big 12 while Missouri moved to 34-9 and 11-6. With Saturday's result, OU fell to 32-1 when scoring first this season. Despite the loss, freshman Lauren Chamberlain tied the OU single season record with her 20th home run.
Coming a day after the Sooners defeated the Tigers, 2-1, in 10 innings, Chamberlain tied Lynette Velazquez (1999) and current OU volunteer coach Lisa Carey (2000) for the single season home run record by sending her 20th blast out in the game's third inning. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native is just four home runs away from tying the Big 12 single season record for the stat.
Michelle Gascoigne got the start for the Sooners and pitched five innings before being replaced by Keilani Ricketts with the score tied up at two. Ricketts took the loss for OU to fall to 22-6 on the year. The junior struck out three while walking three and giving up one hit. Gascoigne left the game with three strikeouts, two walks and six hits given up. Chelsea Thomas claimed the win for Missouri to move to 18-6 on the year as she struck out five and allowed three hits while walking three others.
“We didn't cash in on opportunities today. We were able to put the ball in play more than we did last night but had some mistakes that handed our opportunities over to Missouri,” said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso.
Oklahoma jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by scoring in the first inning for the 17th time this season by taking advantage of a two-out error by Tiger short stop Corrin Genovese. After the throwing error allowed Jessica Shults to reach first, Ricketts reached on a walk while Callie Parsons took Shults' spot on the base path. After hitting the walk off single to win Friday night's game, Georgia Casey sent another clutch two-out hit down the left field line for a single to score Parsons and put OU on the board first.
The lead was doubled in the third when Chamberlain sent her 20th home run of the season out of the OU Softball Complex and in the middle of an ultimate frisbee game being played on the OU Band field.
Just as she did Friday night, however, Missouri's Ashley Fleming used a home run to tie the game up. After hitting a solo shot Friday night to tie the game up at one, Fleming sent a two-run shot into the right center bleachers at the OU Softball Complex to knot things up at two runs each following Jenna Marston's walk to lead the inning off.
Mizzou added the game's final two runs in the eighth inning when Mackenzie Sykes and Marston led off the inning with back-to-back walks before both were moved over a base on Fleming's ground out to short. The Tigers got their first run of the inning when Kelsea Roth sent a sharply-hit single through the right side of Oklahoma's defense and added its final run when Nicole Hudson hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Marston for the game's final run.
The Sooners and the Tigers close out their three-game series on Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. game. Sunday's game will be aired by ESPN with Beth Mowins in the booth alongside Michelle Smith and Jessica Mendoza.
