OU Invitational Starts Friday in OKC

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma rowing team kicks off its spring 2012 spring season by hosting the third annual OU Invitational this weekend, March 9-11, in Oklahoma City. The regatta will feature rowers from Kansas, Tulsa, Southern Methodist University, Creighton, Kansas State University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma.

"We're looking forward to hosting some very good regional opponents," Oklahoma Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "If the weather cooperates, we should get some great racing in over the weekend. I know the team is eager to race and I feel like we're as prepared as we can be. Overall, the team is healthy and ready to go."

Racing begins Friday at 3:40 p.m. and will continue throughout the weekend until Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The regatta is primarily dual racing, with a few races accommodating three teams.

Oklahoma will race in all varsity events as well as the first and second novice eight. On Friday, the Sooners face Kansas in six head-to-head races.OU will take on Kansas State at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The OU women will close Saturday afternoon against Tulsa.

Competition on Sunday is to be determined by Friday and Saturday's results. The eight teams are divided into two brackets with bracket one consisting of OU, KU, KSU and Tulsa and bracket two of UCO, SMU, OCU and Creighton. The top two competitors from each bracket will race on Sunday to decide the overall winner of the weekend.

At last year's OU Invitational, Oklahoma placed second overall with one loss. The Sooners claimed four varsity eight wins, four second varsity eight wins and three varsity four wins to tally 98 points behind the University of San Diego, who went undefeated on the weekend with 104 points.

Admission to the event is free.
