OU Heads To The San Diego Crew Classic

NORMAN, Okla. -The University of Oklahoma rowing team heads to San Diego, Calif., this weekend for the 39th San Diego Crew Classic, March 31 and April 1. The varsity eight received the No. 1 seed in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Seaworld Cal Cup event where they will be facing off against Sacramento State, Tulsa, UC Davis, Western Washington, Villanova and SMU in the first heat. There are 21 schools entered in each event this weekend in three seven-team heats.

The Sooners will field four boats on the weekend with the varsity eight opening the racing at 10:00 a.m. CT. The varsity eight remains undefeated during the Spring 2012 season. The varsity four will face off next Virginia, UCLA, Clemson, USC, British Columbia and SDSU at 11:10 a.m. CT.

The second varsity eight competes in the first heat of their event at 12:30 p.m. CT against California, Washington State, UCLA, Iowa, Alabama and Sacramento State. The novice eight begins racing at 1:30 p.m. CT in the first heat against Cal-Irvine, Sacramento State, Minnesota, Stanford, San Diego and OCC.

Heat results will determine final qualifications and racing times on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Other schools competing include Gonzaga, Miami, Iowa, Tennessee, Duke, Stanford, Clemson and Oregon State. This regatta includes more than 100 races in just two day's time.

The Sooners last faced Texas, San Diego, SMU and UCF at the Longhorn Invitational on March 18. Last year at the San Diego Crew Classic, Oklahoma's varsity eight defeated No. 11 ranked UCLA in the Jessop-Whittier Cup and the varsity four beat out No. 4 ranked Stanford.
