NORMAN, Okla. - The 35th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in third place after Sunday's first round of the loaded 15-team Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue in San Juan, P.R. The Sooners shot a 284 (-4) and are eight strokes out of first place at the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club.
This year's Puerto Rico Classic might be more competitive than ever, with eight of the 15 teams ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin top 50. No. 8 Alabama leads the field by seven strokes at -12 while 16th-ranked Clemson is one shot ahead of OU at -5. Big 12 rivals Texas (ranked No. 1) and Oklahoma State (ranked No. 24) are in fourth and 10th place, respectively.
"Overall as a team we played solid today and looked like a good golf team," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said.
OU senior Riley Pumphrey and junior Will Kropp each led the team with a first-round 70 (-2) and are tied for sixth place. Pumphrey had a busy day at Rio Mar, recording six birdies (on holes No. 2, 5, 6, 8, 11 and 15) and four bogeys. Kropp's first round told a much cleaner story, with one bogey and three birdies. The Sooner duo is three strokes behind Alabama's Justin Thomas (-5), who leads the 75-man field.
"Kropp finished off his round nicely and Pumphrey played great, but just couldn't quite finish it," Hybl said.
Junior Abraham Ancer and freshman Michael Gellerman each fired a first-round 72 (E). Ancer had a relatively calm day, with three bogeys and three birdies on the first 18 of the 54-hole event. Gellerman carded back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13, but was saved with four birdies on the day. Ancer and Gellerman sit in a tie for 21st place.
"Gellerman fought hard for his even-par round, and Abe is so close to shooting low." Hybl said.
Ben Klaus carded a first-round 82 (+10) and is tied for 72nd place. The senior's first round included seven bogeys, two double bogeys and just one birdie.
"The best thing is that our guys are still not pleased with where we are; I like that," Hybl said. "We need need to play the golf course tomorrow and not our opponents, and we will be fine."
The second round of the Puerto Rico Classic will begin Monday morning. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
